Express yourself – what else can you gain?

Making and watching movies is  great fun! But can movie making serve educational purposes? Or is it JUST fun? I believe that with careful pedagogical planning  you can help to build for example language, ICT and thinking skills of your students.

WHAT DID YOU DO?

The aim was to produce a movie where everybody would have a role that fits the individual needs and capabilities. My students chose a horror theme for the movie. My aim as a teacher was to motivate my learners to collaborate and learn to write finnish language in more proper way, since writing seems to be very difficult and unpopular task among the students. My students were extremely motivated to produce a movie so I was using that motivation to build their language, ICT and thinking skills: writing, roleplay, taking turns, thinking about what the others can bring to the project, filming and editing. When I decided to implement movie production into my tuition, I was thinking of the variety of different kind of pedagogical methods that will suit my learners with different kind of needs (16+ y, 8 boys and girls). My ultimate goal was to activate every individual and make sure that they will have a role that will support their personal expertise, ability and skills that need more training.

HOW DID YOU DO IT?

We had two 3 hours' workshops. There were 3 teachers and a learning assistant. Everyone had a individual iPad but we ended up using only one for filming and editing (easiest).

 Breaktown of the time:
  • 2 hours team spirit and script
  • 2 hours filming
  • 2 hours editing
 Steps:
  1. movie production and team play - conversation
  2. typewriting: how to use Pages -workshop
  3. writing the script
  4. supporting language skills and finding errors: a sentence ends with a dot and starts with the capital letter
  5. individual roles in the movie production, for example camera man, costume provider, the ghost, father and son
  6. finding filming locations: indoors and outdoors
  7. how to make a movie -lesson
  8. acting and filming
  9. how to edit - lesson
  10. editing
  11. presenting the movie
  12. conversation and feedback

WHY WERE TABLETS USED/WAS IT BENEFICIAL?

Without tablets this concept would have lasted longer and been more difficult for learners with different kind of needs. iPads are so easy to use and are really all-in-one devices: no need to transfer files between camera, camcorder, and PC. Apple Store also provides fairly easy to use apps for editing and type writing. In my opinion iPads were extremely beneficial from the teachers and learners point of view. The only thing we were a bit disappointed was the quality of the iPad's microphone, when filming outdoors. We should have really used a separate microphone (plug-in).

HOW DID IT SUPPORT INCLUSIVE TEACHING?

The whole session was designed for inclusive teaching and individual expertise. That's my pedagogical starting point and in this project, because I used activating individual methods, the pedagogical goals were achieved. Now we have already produced 4 movies, so we are starting to be movie professionals!
